The poet John Donne penned: “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.”

This inescapable connectedness makes the study of interpersonal communications – communication between two people or a small group –vital.  An understanding of the dynamics involved in such communication will improve our interactions with friends, family, and colleagues.

Through discussions; critical reflection; synthesis of the selected readings and discourse; group activities; social experiments and observation; and individual assignments; this site will promote effective communication. We will examine numerous issues, including, bridging cultural differences, empathetic listening, conflict management, self-esteem and self-concept, perception, and verbal and non-verbal communication.

  • Increase your knowledge of theories, research findings, and terminology of interpersonal study
  • Understand the dynamics of communications in interpersonal encounters
  • Improve your ability to identify communication strengths and weaknesses as they pertain to interpersonal communication and interpersonal relationships
  • Improve interpersonal communication skills for use in personal, social, and professional settings
  • Develop more constructive and effective attitudes towards interpersonal expressions
  • Identify sources of interpersonal conflicts and develop communication skills to resolve them
  • Have improved research and public speaking skills
